It describes the process involved in bringing Charla Nash some semblance of humanity after having it nearly fatally ripped away from her. This book is a very short read, clocking in at only 85 pages. But what really shook me was how heavy these few pages felt. As I was reading I would occasionally place the book down and not only would I be extremely grateful for my own life, but I would often ask myself what I would do given that I were in her position. Not only do I question whether I would survive the attack, but I wonder if I would have the resilience to endure the aftermath. The stares, the medical procedures, and the self-reflection. It truly puts things into perspective.
The way NBC covers the story must be commended. Never did I feel like the accounts were patronizing nor insensitive; the retelling of events were done in a professionally objective way. Again, this is not an in-depth read; it merely recounts the post-attack challenges Charla Nash faced. And along with Charla Nash we also see the effects that something this tragic can have on the family as we briefly see her daughter struggling side by side with her mother as a life hangs in the balance. I couldn’t help but feel that Charla Nash’s daughter’s commitment, compassion, and unwavering love undoubtedly played a major factor in Charla’s survival.
For those looking for a heartwarming tale, look elsewhere. This is a tragedy that is at times hard to fathom. But I think it is a story worth reading. The Woman Who Lost Her Face is not a biography. Instead it is a tribute to Charla Nash’s reclaimed humanity and a testament to the primal will to live. The book certainly get my recommendation in today’s Amazon eBook review.
